While in the mall yesterday...
You know *those* girls - the ones with the perfectly straight hair, Uggs, skinny, stylishly draped sweatpants, and shallow personality? I walked by a pair of them at the mall yesterday however they were college aged so I figured the high school shallow had left. We passed each other outside a Victoria's Secrets
Girl 1: Have you seen their new model? *nods her head at the store front*
Girl 2: Nope.
Girl 1: Their new model has a big fucking gap in her teeth.

AGP: *gives me a "are-you-fucking-crazy?" look*

AGP: Okay... well it says in the Bible "A man shall not lay with another man as he lays with a woman." Haven't you read the Bible before young lady?

Me: That's me. So, back to the point - you think homosexuality is wrong because it was written in the book of the Lord?
AGP: *firmly* Yes. The Good Lord passed His word among us for *all* of us to hear.
Me: Okay, fair enough. Do you know where Christianity sprang from? Y'know, the culture it originated in?
AGP: *looking confused but determined* Uh yeah. Rome of course. Why?
Me: Historical context. Homosexuality was outlawed for the exact same reason magic was outlawed in the Bible - because the pagan Romans were doing it.
AGP: It figures. Pagans and their nasty homo rituals.
Me: Actually, they practiced a thing called pederasty which is not at all homosexuality in the modern sense - it was a loving relationship between a dominant and a submissive male. Both of which enjoyed women. *to the sneering look on his face* Things were different then.
AGP: Disgusting! Thank the Lord Christianity came and brought the Lord's Grace.
Me: So, you think it's alright for men to beat women?
AGP: What? No, of course not. ...why?
Me: It was perfectly acceptable back in the 50s.
AGP: Well, times were different then.
Me: Oh so you mean historical context matters? *as non-sarcastically as possible*
AGP: *opens mouth to answer and then closes it - several times*
Me: *looks to anti-gay sign* Next time think before you believe blindly. *walk away feeling unbelievably smug*
First of all, yes this did actually happen - an anti-gay protester decided to be a human being long enough to have a conversation. I'm not saying I changed his mind about gays or gay rights, but I got him to *think* (I hope). Thinking is one of the greatest things we can do for ourselves and yet, sometimes, seldom done.
As an aside: do you have any idea how hard it is to keep cool, calm, and jovial during a conversation like this? I attempted to add in the non-verbal context, but his whole demeanor was one of thinly disguised hate and disgust. The "young lady" part was incredibly patronizing! I almost stopped there, but it was worth the temporary aggravation.
